Coldfall Wood is an ancient wood in Muswell Hill, North London. It covers an area of approximately 14 hectares and is presently surrounded by the St. Pancras and Islington Cemetery, the East Finchley public allotments, and the residential roads Creighton Avenue and Barrenger Road. It is the site of the discoveries which first led to the recognition that glaciation had once reached southern England.

History and Municipal Ownership

Southern Entrance to Coldfall Wood

The Haringey district of London contains no less than five distinct ancient woods. These are Highgate Wood, Queen’s Wood, Coldfall Wood, Bluebell Wood and North Wood. All are shown on John Rocque’s 1754 Map of Middlesex.

Until the early 20th century Coldfall Wood covered more than twice its current extent, reaching south to the properties bordering Fortis Green. The southern section was felled and partially excavated for gravel, before being used for residential development and the sites of Tollington and William Grimshaw schools (later Fortismere School). Tollington first rented and felled part of the wood for a sports field in the 1920s and subsequently moved to a new building on the site. William Grimshaw was built later to the north.

Coldfall Wood was purchased in 1930 by Hornsey Council and the remaining section is now owned and managed by the London Borough of Haringey. It is bounded to the North by the St. Pancras and Islington Cemetery and the Muswell Hill Sports Ground (formerly Finchley Common). Its western boundary is the boundary line between the London Boroughs of Barnet and Haringey. This western boundary and its northern boundaries are demarcated by the remains of an ancient woodbank with a ditch on the outer side. This would have prevented grazing animals from the surrounding Finchley Common and Horseshoe Farm (as they then were) from entering the wood and destroying the young coppice.

Coldfall Wood has been examined in some detail by Silvertown (1978), who used historical sources to show that the woodlands are likely to be of primary origin (i.e. continuously present since prehistoric times).

Flora

The absence of foliage on this blasted oak lets light through to the woodland floor

Like the other local ancient woodlands in the area, the Wood is dominated by oak standards, but the understorey is much less diverse and consists of almost pure stands of multi-stemmed, overgrown hornbeam coppice. Beech, hazel, mountain ash and Wild Service Tree are all rare, though there are some fine specimens of the last species.

Hornbeam Understorey

Little light penetrates to the woodland floor and large areas of the Wood are devoid of either shrub, field or ground layers of vegetation. Consequently the Wood presents a dark and gloomy appearance in the summer months. Nevertheless, in the few natural glade areas caused by the collapse of an occasional canopy tree, the flora is of considerable interest. Pill sedge hangs on in its only known Haringey site and tiny populations of cow-wheat, slender St. John’s wort, wood anemone, and Heath Speedwell manage to survive though they seldom flower.

An area of approximately one acre was cut in the north western corner of the Wood in December 1990 with the assistance of the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers, the Friends of Coldfall Wood and the Haringey Branch of the London Wildlife Trust. The felled hornbeam poles were cut, stacked on site and allowed to decay in situ to provide deadwood habitat for the benefit of invertebrates and fungi. Brushwood was used to construct a dead hedge around the coppice. This has protected the area from trampling, both by dogs and humans, and will hopefully provide a nesting habitat for wrens and other woodland birds. Regrowth from the cut hornbeam stools has been encouraging with a maximum growth of 2 metres being recorded by the end of 1991.

The vegetational succession following the coppice is being carefully monitored by means of permanent quadrats. In the first year after coppicing, more than seventy species of flowering plant have been recorded here - a gratifying increase from the original flora of a mere six species. The newcomers include heath groundsel which is unknown elsewhere in the Borough, suggesting the possibility that its seed may have lain dormant in the soil since the last coppice was cut before the last World War. Ring counts of the coppice poles suggest that this was done about sixty years ago. The majority of new plants, however, will have colonised from outside and many of the arrivals are widespread ruderal species typical of disturbed open habitats, such as mugwort, sow-thistles and willowherbs. Rosebay willowherb dominates much of the area. A hundred years ago this was a rare plant in…(and so on)

Features

Sound Recorder can record audio from a microphone or headset; many modern sound cards allow their output channels to be recorded (the loopback channel is typically called Wave Out Mix or similar). The recorded audio can be saved in .wav or .mp3 format inside the .WAV container. Sound Recorder can also open existing uncompressed or compressed .wav files. To successfully open compressed .WAV files in Sound Recorder, the audio codec used by the file must be installed in ACM.

Sound Recorder in all versions of Windows prior to Windows Vista, was based on Audio Compression Manager. It could open and save audio in 8-bit or 16-bit uncompressed PCM format (.wav) from 8 kHz to 48 kHz, including CD Quality audio (44,100 Hz, 16-bit, stereo PCM).

Although it allowed saving only to the .wav container format, it could use any of the installed ACM codecs to compress the audio; typically several voice codecs and the MPEG Layer III (MP3) codec were installed by default. As ACM supported only Constant bitrate (CBR) stereo audio files, Sound Recorder also had these limitations and did not support Variable bitrate (VBR) files or multichannel audio.

All versions prior to the Windows Vista version of Sound Recorder could apply some simple audio transformations:

Convert the bitrate, bit depth and sampling rate of the audio file

Use Audio Compression Manager (ACM) to compress the audio using installed ACM codecs or convert it to a different codec format.

Inserting and/or mixing in audio from other files.

Splitting out parts of the current audio clip.

Increasing or decreasing volume in 25% increments.

Increase or decrease playback speed in 100% increments.

Adding an echo (without reverberation).

Reversing the current audio clip.

Criticism

The older version of Sound Recorder recorded audio to memory, rather than to the hard disk, and the length of the recording was by default limited to 60 seconds. There are several strategies to extend the length of recording time, however. By recording 60 seconds and pressing the Record button again, the user could record another minute. This procedure had to be repeated to record a sound of the desired length. Alternatively, it was possible to open a previously existing blank file of the desired length and record over it. Also, the user could implement the Decrease Speed function several times to extend the length of the recording.

Command line switches are needed as it will not auto-play a file referenced in a batch file, startup folder, or task scheduler event. Use the /PLAY switch to launch the playback automatically. (SNDREC32.exe /PLAY “C:\Path\File.wav”) Use the /CLOSE switch at the end of the string to close the application. (SNDREC32.exe /PLAY “C:\Path\File.wav” /CLOSE) In Vista, Sound Recorder is instead called SoundRecorder.exe and lacks these command-line switches.

On computers with more than 2 GB of RAM, after recording (but not when playing), Sound Recorder will return an error message saying there is not enough memory. This is a design fault of older versions of Sound Recorder and cannot be resolved except by reducing the amount of available physical memory.

Under some circumstances, Sound Recorder will not default to the Windows default recording device (set in Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices, Audio tab, Sound recording, Default device). In this case, one must manually select it by clicking Edit, Audio Properties.

The new version of Sound Recorder included in Windows Vista uses the hard disk for recording audio and can therefore record audio up to any length as long as there is free space on the hard disk drive. Also, tags such as Artist, Album, Title, and Genre can be added to the sound file directly from the Save dialog. However, Sound Recorder lacks several features that were present in the earlier version of the program. It cannot open existing WAV or WMA files, and by default, it only allows saving to the lossy WMA format at 96 kbit/s. (Windows Vista N only allows saving as WAV; on other editions, to force Sound Recorder to save as WAV, the user must start Sound Recorder with the command line “soundrecorder /file outputfile.wav”.) Sound Recorder has been stripped of all basic audio processing features, foremost the ability to play an audio file, but also lacks sample rate conversion, adding echo, reversing the audio, changing volume and playback…(and so on)

Green is a color, the perception of which is evoked by light having a spectrum dominated by energy with a wavelength of roughly 520570-nm. In the subtractive color system, it is not a primary color, but is created out of a mixture of yellow and blue, or yellow and cyan; it is considered one of the additive primary colors. On the HSV color wheel, the complement of green is magenta; that is, a purple color corresponding to an equal mixture of red and blue light. On a color wheel based on traditional color theory (RYB), the complementary color to green is considered to be red.

The word green is closely related to the Old English verb growan, o grow. It is used to describe plants or the ocean. Sometimes it can also describe someone who is inexperienced, jealous, or sick. In America, green is a slang term for money, among other things. Several colloquialisms have derived from these meanings, such as reen around the gills, a phrase used to describe a person who looks ill.

Several minerals have a green color, including the emerald, which is colored green by its chromium content. Animals such as frogs, lizards, and other reptiles and amphibians, fish, insects, and birds, appear green because of a mixture of layers of blue and green coloring on their skin. By far the largest contributor to green in nature is chlorophyll, the chemical by which plants photosynthesize. Many creatures have adapted to their green environments by taking on a green hue themselves as camouflage.

Culturally, green has broad and sometimes contradictory meanings. In some cultures, green symbolizes hope and growth, while in others, it is associated with death, sickness, envy or the devil. The most common associations, however, are found in its ties to nature. For example, Islam venerates the color, as it expects paradise to be full of lush greenery. Green is also associated with regeneration, fertility and rebirth for its connections to nature. Recent political groups have taken on the color as symbol of environmental protection and social justice, and consider themselves part of the Green movement, some naming themselves Green parties. This has led to similar campaigns in advertising, as companies have sold green, or environmentally friendly, products.

Etymology and definitions

In traffic lights, green means “go”.

The word green comes from the Old English word grene, or, in its older form, groeni. This adjective is closely related to the Old English verb growan (o grow) and goes back into Western Germanic and Scandinavian languages. The word designates the color on the visible light spectrum situated between blue and yellow. It is often used to describe foliage and the sea, and has become a symbol of environmentalism. It also is combined with other color names to increase specificity, as in lue-green, or with objects, as in merald green. Green is also used to describe jealousy and envy, as well as anyone young, inexperienced, or gullible (probably by analogy to unripe, i.e. unready or immature, fruit). Green is sometimes associated with nausea and sickness. Lastly, green can communicate safety to proceed, as in traffic lights. Overall, greens, along with blues and purples, are frequently described as ool colors, in contrast to red and yellow. Some languages have no word separating green from blue (see blue-green across cultures).

The word green is found in several colloquial phrases derived from these meanings: in golf, the region of grass around the hole is trimmed short and referred to as the putting green, or simply, the green. Someone who works well with plants is said to have a green thumb or green fingers, a physically-ill person is said to look green around the gills, and the word greenhorn refers to an inexperienced person. A company is greenwashing if they advertise positive environmental practices to cover up environmental destruction. Green with envy highlights another emotional association, which William Shakespeare had first described as the “green-eyed monster” in Othello and…(and so on)

Clairol logo

Clairol is a personal care products division of Procter & Gamble. The Clairol company was started in 1931 by an entrepreneurial chemist and his wife who named their enterprise after a hair-coloring preparation they found while traveling in France. In the 1950s, after two decades of selling the company hair tint to beauty salons, Clairol became a household name when it launched the first one-step home hair color formula, Miss Clairol Hair Color Bath, which debuted with the now-famous catchphrase, oes sher doesn she? Only her hairdresser knows for sure. Within six years of Miss Clairol launch, 70% of women were coloring their hair.

With a shampoo-in hair color and a memorable catchphrase, Clairol captured the feminist sensibilities of the day, wrote Malcom Gladwell, author of social-psychology bestsellers The Tipping Point and Blink, in rue Colors, a 1999 New Yorker article about the hidden history of hair dye. He posited: n writing the history of women in the postwar era, did we forget something important? Did we leave out hair?

Today Clairol makes hair coloring, hair spray, shampoo, hair conditioner and styling consumables and publishes a free beauty magazine called Color Source. Among its brands are Balsam Color, Herbal Essences, Hydrience, Loving Care, Natural Instincts, Nice Easy and Ultress. (See the lairol Products section below for a complete list.)

Clairol Industry Makeover

In 1949 the single-step Miss Clairol Hair Color Bath was introduced to the U.S. beauty industry. When Clairol sales representatives gave a live demonstration of Miss Clairol at the International Beauty Show in New York City, thousands of hairdressers and beauticians gathered to watch. Bruce Gelb, son of Lawrence and Joan and a former Clairol executive, described the scene in the New Yorker article: hey were astonished. This was to the world of hair color what computers were to the world of adding machines. The sales guys had to bring buckets of water and do the rinsing off in front of everyone, because the hairdressers in the crowd were convinced we were doing something to the models behind the scenes.

In 1956 Clairol launched an at-home version of Miss Clairol hair color, promoted by one of the most effective advertising campaigns of the time, “Does sher doesn she? Only her hairdresser knows for sure.”

In 1957 the Gelbs sold their company to Bristol-Myers Squibb. Sons Bruce and Richard L. Gelb filled executive positions at that pharmaceutical company; Richard was chief executive officer from 1972 to 1993. In 2001 Procter & Gamble purchased the Clairol division from Bristol-Myers Squibb.

Clairol Colorful Advertising History

Clairol one-step home hair color was a breakthrough for the beauty industry, and just as novel was the advertising campaign that introduced Clairol to consumers.

Clairol hired the advertising firm Foote, Cone & Belding, which assigned the account to a junior copywriter, Shirley Polykoff, who was also the sole female copywriter at the firm. It was her future mother-in-law who inspired the now-famous oes sher doesn she? catchphrase. After meeting Polykoff for the first time, she took her son aside and grilled him about the true hue of his girlfriend tresses. oes she color her hair? Or doesn she? the humiliated Polykoff could imagine her mother-in-law-to-be asking.

In fact, Polykoff did, though the practice was not something to which women openly admitted during the Depression, when her future mother-in-law first posed the question. Even by 1956, when Polykoff was assigned the Clairol campaign, hair dye was still considered something only tawdry women used.

To counter the stigma of hair color and create a wholesome image for Clairol, early print ads some of which were shot by fashion photographers Richard Avedon and Irving Penn featured girl-next-door-ish models accompanied by children sporting locks of the same shade. The idea was to skew toward the sentimental, not the tawdry.

oes sher doesn she? became one of the most effective campaigns of the time: Within six years, 70% of all adult women were coloring their hair, and Clairol sales increased 413%. In 1967 Polykoff was inducted into the Advertising Hall of Fame.

In addition, the company gained notoriety in the late 90s/early 2000s for its ads for Clairol Herbal Essences shampoo. Proclaimed as ‘a totally organic experience’, the ads would often feature women washing their hair while making noises similar to those of someone in the stage of orgasm.

More Iconic Catchphrases

Clairol continued to market its hair color products with clever catchphrases. In the 1960s ads for Lady Clairol boldly asked, s it true…(and so on)

Rocar DAC 112 UDM bus in Bucharest, in the 1996-2006 RATB livery. RATB was the main operator of such buses in the late 1980s and early 1990s, with over 500 buses and 100 trolleybuses. No Rocar DAC vehicle is still present in the RATB fleet

Rocar 117UD bus in Targu Jiu. It was built in 1996.

Rocar DAC was a series of buses and trolleybuses produced by the Autobuzul (later Rocar) plant of Bucharest, Romania, between 1979 and 2000. They were available in either standard, 12 meter versions, and articulated, 17 meter version.

For much of the 1980s and early 1990s, these buses and trolleybuses were the backbone of the urban transportation network of Romania since, throughout the 1980s, public transportation companies were not allowed to import any type of vehicle.

The buses were designed and built in a period of severe shortages, the main emphasis being put on economizing material usage and simplicity of the design. Most buses of this type did not have power or assisted steering, and only a small number of buses, built in the early part of the project (1979-1982) employed automatic gearboxes. The passenger area was also very spartan, having no interior sound or display systems, seats being built out of plywood, light fixtures being 6-8 small 12-volt light bulbs providing insufficient lighting.

During the late 1980s, some were converted to run on methane gas, by installing two or three gas tanks on the roofs. After the fall of the communist regime, the buses were converted back to diesel. DAC buses were equipped with Hungarian RABA-MAN engines, or with Romanian IABv engines capable of 192 horse power DIN and a 4 or 6 gears gear box for a maximum speed of 65 km/h.

In 1996, Rocar began replacing the model line-up with the new Rocar DeSimon range that was produced until the bankruptcy of the company in 2003 (however, Dac 112 UDM buses were built until 2000). Most Rocar DAC buses have been withdrawn from service, and replaced with more modern buses. However, some survive with smaller transport companies, on some rural services and in small towns. Trolleybuses, on the other hand, have fared better, because of the higher purchasing cost and lower wear-and-tear, and are still a common site in cities such as Cluj or Kiev.

Models

Buses

DAC 112 UDM - the standard 12 meter model, used for urban or suburban routes. This was the base model for all later designs. Available with 2 or 3 doors. Built between 1982 and 2000.

DAC 117 UD - the articulated, 17 meter model. Available with 2 or 4 doors. Built between 1979 and 1998.

DAC UDAN 2002 - an attempt at modernizing the DAC 112 UDM by replacing the engine and transmission of the DAC 112 UDM with an Euro 2 compliant model, as well as modernizing the bodywork. Only 2 were built before the project was deemed unsuccessful. Both are currently operated by RATB.

Trolleybuses

DAC 112 E - Standard trolleybus, powered by one 115kW direct current motor.

DAC 212 E - Standard trolleybus, powered by one 125kW direct current motor. Outfitted with an electronic command system for its contactors.

DAC 212 ECS - Same as DAC 212 E, but using a chopper system as a speed control. ECS stands for Electric Chopper System.

DAC 117 E(A) - Articulated trolleybus, powered by one 115kW direct current motor. Although some operators called these vehicles DAC 117 EA (with A form ‘articulated’; some also called the articulated buses ‘DAC 117 UDA’), all the VIN plates of these vehicles shows the correct name (without the ‘A’).

DAC 217 E - Articulated trolleybus, powered by one 125kW direct current motor. The most common model, with electronic command of the contactors

DAC 317 ETS - Same with DAC 217 E, but with the motor controlled by thyristors. ETS stands for Electric Thyristor System.

DAC 318 ET Tandem - Articulated trolleybus, powered by two DC motors, working in tandem. Only one prototype was built.

The Aston Martin Owners Club (AMOC, pronounced aim-moc) is one of the oldest one-make car enthusiast clubs, one of the largest with worldwide membership and one of the leaders.

It was the late Mortimer Morris-Goodall, ort to many friends, who started it all. Having been fired with enthusiasm by an International bought when brash lad of some 20 summers and by his first meeting with ert Bertelli shortly after, his success led to the purchase of the team car LM7 and an invitation to drive nder works control at Le Mans in 1933. His reverence for ert and his Astons prompted the thought that almost everyone else who had the good fortune or sense to own an Aston felt the same and ow nice it would be to meet some of these people.

S.C.H. (ammy) Davis agreed that an Aston Martin Owners Club would be a good idea and inserted a note in The Autocar (of which he was Sports Editor) of 3 and 17 May, 1935, calling a meeting. The 20 or 30 people who turned up on 25 May also agreed and elected a committee which included Lance Prideaux-Brune, Dick Anthony, Maurice Falkner, Harold Bevan, Miss Dorothy Bean and Peter Cadbury.

Charles Jarrott was persuaded to become the President and Sammy Davis the Vice-President, with Leslie Keevil as Honorary Treasurer and Mort Goodall as Honorary Secretary. The Club activities, mostly social, including an annual dinner-dance at the Park Lane Hotel, were brought to a close by the Second World War.

The process started again at a meeting led by Dick Stallebrass at the R.A.C. on 5 March, 1948. However, following his tragic death at Spa only four months later, Dudley Coram started to play a leading role in the re-formed Club, with Eric Cutler as Chairman. At one time or another, Coram served in every capacity in the Club before he died in 1976.

Although the pre-war archives have been lost, the present rules are believed to enshrine the same principles as those drafted in 1935. Our Memorandum of Association provides, inter alia, that the Club is established to romote the sport and pastime of motoring, evelop interest in the ASTON MARTIN CAR and ncourage social intercourse between Members. The Club, in the UK, puts on some five race meetings a year, at least one hillclimb and three sprints. Worldwide, the Club is represented on most continents, with thriving sections in Germany, Holland, Switzerland and the USA. Other countries have a smaller representation which are no less enthusiastic. These groups also entertain their fellow Members with various events.

[1995 saw the Club celebrate its Diamond Jubilee. The traditional annual events all took on a Jubilee focus and were supplemented by other special attractions, both local and national as well as international, some 30 in all. The year kicked off with the Grand Jubilee Ball at the Dorchester Hotel, London, The party-goers enjoyed the spectacle of a grand display of Aston Martin cars. They were welcomed by an Aston Martin DB7 exhibited outside the Ballroom. Inside, cars with chassis numbers 1914; 1925; D5/569/S; C7/719/U; LML/50/396 and DB5/2261/R were all arranged on specially constructed stands.

A silver Diamond Jubilee Virage Volante made a fitting isplay case for a million dollars worth of Cartier jewellery! The AGM saw our President, Lord Downe, receive the Club premier award, the Bertelli Trophy. Another highlight, was the Founders Day Dinner at the Grafton Hotel where, on the 25th May 1935, the Club was formed. With a limitation on space, it is not possible to detail all the other events however, the special displays at the St. John Horsfall and the Historic Weekend at Silverstone were remarkable.

he Family as the late Viscount Downe worded his toast to the Club sixtieth year, has continued to meet at the Club social and competitive events and stay in touch through its publications, AM Quarterly and the News Sheet which have carried reports of the many Club events around the world as have the publications that originate in other parts of the world.

Every four years, a Register of Members Cars is published and has become the tandard work on the Marque. The Aston Martin Heritage Trust, now has the responsibility for publishing this work.

Enthusiasm coupled with the right people continues to ensure that the Club thrives, just as the same combination has enabled our marque to survive from the early days of the motor car. The fingers of only one hand are enough on which to count Aston Martin Brooklands contemporaries in the 1920s that remain in production!

May 23 1997, was a ed letter day for the Club with the unveiling by Lady Paula Brown and John Martin of the Cairn, erected in memory of Lionel Martin, at the top of Aston Hill in Buckinghamshire. The inspiration of the Club Chairman, Ian MacGregor, this memorial was designed by Member John Evans and constructed on Forestry Commission land with support from the Club and AML Ltd.

The Club found that it was…(and so on)

Introduction

China Academy of Art (also China National Academy of Fine Arts)(traditional Chinese: ??????; simplified Chinese: ??????; pinyin: Zh?nggu M?ish Xuu), colloquially known in Chinese as Guomei (??, Gu?i).

The China Academy of Art has the most complete range of degree offerings and programs of study in fine arts in China. There are eight schools under its jurisdiction offering Ph.D., master and bachelor degrees in fine arts, design, architecture, multi-media and film.

There are currently 7000 undergraduate and graduate students in three campuses with a faculty and staff of 800. The administration of the Academy is headquartered in the Nanshan Campus, which is located right on the beautiful West Lake in Hangzhou. There other regional campuses are the Zhangjiang Campus, which is strategically located in Shanghai, and the Xiangshan Central Campus. In our eleventh five-year plan, the undergraduate student population will grow to 6,600 with a graduate student body of 800, making it one of the biggest fine art institutions in the world.

Undergraduate students typically spend one year in general education courses in the Department of Foundation and then three years in the core courses of their particular majors. Graduate courses are typically three years long and include extensive experience in the studio and research with mentoring faculty. Foreign students can take short-term or long-term courses in Chinese art, language and culture in the Institute of International Education.

The Academy encourages diversity in thinking, art exploration and academy research. It takes as its motto iversity in harmony and fosters an environment for innovation.
